Weighing the upgrade
An impact-rated line on a proposal should identify the product and test classification. The rating gives you something specific to compare; it does not decide whether an upgrade pays for itself.
The shingle is one part of the assembly. Underlayment, flashing, ventilation and installation instructions still matter when two products have different ratings.
Three-tab and laminated architectural shingles describe different constructions. An impact classification describes a tested result. Compare the exact product’s classification separately from its shape or weight.

No. The classification reports performance under a laboratory test. Real hail varies in shape, speed and conditions, and a tested shingle can still be damaged. The rating is not an extension of warranty coverage.
Product, installation, exposure, ventilation and maintenance all affect service life. A warranty term is not a prediction that the roof will remain serviceable for that many years.
An overlay requires assessment of the existing assembly and applicable product and code requirements. Removing the covering allows the deck to be examined. Compare that benefit and the removal scope before deciding.
Start with products that fit the roof, then compare their appearance, tested performance, installed cost and terms. If an insurance credit matters to the decision, obtain the carrier’s answer for that product.
